Photoshoot: Haiti, Ode à ma terre de café. It is only a few days after the ravaging earthquake that shook my Haiti chérie on tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 16.53 local time that I felt slightly ready to speak a few words about the emotions that have been going through my being. It is devastating, yes. It is sad, yes. Is it the end? NO. I remain firmly optimistic and realistic in my affirming that Haiti will prevail, it has to. We, Haitians on and off the island, have the sweet obligation to ourselves NOW to pick ourselves up, dust off our bodies, remember the past, then with a graceful face, look forward. We, Haitians on and off the island, have the choice to project into the future. We have suffered much since 1789. We have fought for our independence in the midst of language barriers. We have had a countless amount of civil wars. We have prevailed in times of political unrests. We have survived in that environment of insecurity. We have remained positive regardless of the treatment received from polititians foreign and domestic. We have rebuilt in hard times of hurricanes and other natural disasters. We have held strong in the middle of hunger. We have kept our heads high despite of the constant humiliation from the world. We have worked extremely long and hard to develop our distinct identity. We are a hospitable people. We are a respectable people. We are who we are. We are proud to be called Haitians... We are Haitians to the core!
